Plongeant pour sentir l’eau la main dans le courant
A quelques pas d’une source chaude, je n’entendis
Que la nappe de boue chuchotant et bouillant.

Alors derrière moi le guide me disant :
« Lukewarm. Et il faut que vous sachiez
Que Luk est un vieux mot islandais pour main.

Et il faut que tu saches (mais tu le sais déjà)
Comme sa pression m’a semblé familière
Quand la paume cachée de l’eau trouva ma paume.

Et voici le poème dans sa version originale :

As I dipped to test the stream some yards away
From a hot spring, I could hear nothing
But the whole mud-slick muttering and boiling.
And then my guide behind me saying,
‘Lukewarm. And I think you’d want to know
That luk was an old Icelandic word for hand.’
And you would want to know (but you know already)
How usual that waft and pressure felt
When the inner palm of water found my palm.
